St. John Festivities
The city’s biggest festival takes place on June 23rd but there are related events on the days before throughout June. It honors St. John but it’s not a religious feast and may actually have origins in the pagan celebration of the summer solstice.
It became a regular city-wide event in the 19th century with street parties on the riverfront, especially in the Ribeira district.
There’s music, grilled meat and fish in every corner, and a fireworks show.
