At night, both locals and tourists gravitate towards the
Ribeira district for its number of bars and cafes, many of which have outdoor seating.
Directly across the river in
Cais de Gaia
is also a number of pleasant cafes for a post-dinner drink, with the added bonus of floodlit city
views and of the river bathed in the moonlight.
Oporto does have some big, cool clubs, for which the younger population heads west, towards the
Foz district and the seaside Matosinhos suburb next door.
"Estado Novo" and "Industria" are generally considered to be the best Oporto clubs. "Twins" and "Act"
are two that compete for that title,
while "Via Rapida" and "Bazaar" are both trendy choices for music and drinks.
For live music, "Aniki Bobo" is an Oporto classic, while an alternative and artistic crowd gathers at "Maus Habitos".
The gay community also has a
small number of options, for which you should check out GoOporto.com's
Gay Oporto page.
For more details on these and other nighttime choices, see our
bars and clubs pages.
