A square to sit and rest
At the end of the city's most popular street, Rua de Santa Catarina,
is this also mostly-pedestrianised square.
It is a pleasant place in which to rest, with several benches and cafes.
It is overlooked by a statue of King Pedro V and São João Theater, a building with a French Renaissance
touch, inspired by the Louvre and the Paris Opera. The city's most important cultural events and shows take place here.
Another noteworthy building is the old Post Office, dating from the late 18th century.
Turn the corner, and you'll be struck by the tiled façade of
Santo Ildefonso Church.
