Porto's port wine lodges opened their doors to visitors in the 1960s and have since become the city's most sought-after attraction.
There are over 50 of them (not all open to visitors), and most of them stand on the Gaia hillside with their world-famous names in giant neon signs (names such as Sandeman, Graham, Taylor's, and Cockburn will especially be familiar to British tourists).
They offer free guided tours and tastings, explaining the winemaking and storage process, as well as the origin and characteristics
of the wine.
Sandeman is perhaps the most accessible, as it stands right on the riverfront, but Taylor's is also recommended for the fantastic views.
Sample the different types of port: the aperitif, dry white, amber-colored tawny, rich ruby and vintage.
